What a Shaft Number Actually Tells You
Flex, weight, torque, and material each play a role in how a shaft behaves — and none of them can be judged from a sticker alone. Here's the plain-language version.
A Loose Category, Not a Fixed Spec
Flex names (Ladies, Senior, Regular, Stiff, Extra Stiff) aren't standardized between manufacturers — a "Stiff" from one brand can play noticeably softer or firmer than a "Stiff" from another. Think of flex as a description of how much a shaft bows and snaps back during the downswing relative to your own speed and tempo.
Go too flexible for your swing speed and you'll likely see an inconsistent face angle at impact plus extra spin; go too stiff, and feel drops off along with your ability to load the shaft at all.
Steel, Graphite, or a Mix of Both
Steel
Heavier and more uniform from shaft to shaft, which delivers sharp feedback and control. Still the go-to for iron and wedge shafts among players chasing feel and consistency.
Graphite
Shaves weight to boost clubhead speed for players who can use it, and cuts down on vibration for a smoother feel. The default in drivers, fairway woods, and hybrids, and increasingly common in irons for slower-tempo swingers.
Multi-Material
Pairs a steel tip section with a graphite body to blend control and feel with reduced weight and vibration — a category that keeps growing in iron shafts.
The Numbers Hiding Behind the Flex Label
Torque tracks how much a shaft twists under load — lower torque usually means a more stable feel for faster, more aggressive swings, while higher torque adds feel and a softer release for smoother tempos.
Weight interacts with flex more than most golfers expect: a lighter shaft in the same flex rating generally plays softer and adds clubhead speed, while a heavier shaft in that same flex plays firmer with more control.
